It's the solstice today, the first day of summer, and it's not only June gloomy and fogged in, we actually had rain here this morning. So instead of a photo of monochromatic gray to start the new season, here's a solstice sunrise shot in Paradise Cove in 2007, the sun at the farthest edge of it's annual journey east, and the marine layer in ready-for-summer retreat.
Meanwhile, this blog will go on continue a brief hiatus but will, Girl Scout's honor, return soon.
It's very June gloomy here today so the video's pretty gray. If it had been sunny, though, we probably wouldn't have been able to see the dolphins in the glare. Whenever you see the gulls gather like that, wait a second and chances are good you'll see the dolphin pod whose leftovers they're feasting on.
AND if videos still don't play on this blog platform, you can see the video here, at the new and not-even-a-tiny-bit-improved Flickr.
Marine layer wafting in and out all day gave us a nice 72 degrees, 30 degrees cooler than it was on Mulholland Highway.
One of my favorite oak trees has struggled over the years, sometimes edging so close to the firewood end of the spectrum that I've feared someone would cut it down. Here it was thirteen months ago, scary-skinny despite winter rain:
And here it is today, bending a bit under the weight of a newly-abundant canopy.
One of our hikes takes us past what must be a rabbit burrow because over the last few months we've seen just about every member of the family, from just-hatched fluffballs (yes, I know rabbits don't actually hatch) to grand old matriarchs (or is it a male?) like this one. One thing's for sure -- when it comes to living near available food, these bunnies have clearly chosen well.
The marine layer is so low and weepy here today that it's basically raining, billions of pixels of moisture soaking the outdoor cushions, be-dewing the dogs, and cutting weekend traffic in half. Meanwhile, here's the Long Beach neighborhood of Naples back in the day, gondoliers and all.
