It's surreal that barely a week after temps here hit 106 (a friend near Trancas said their thermometer reached 109) it's cloudy and breezy and cool and there's even talk of rain in the forecast.
Fingers crossed.
We're in the midst of autumn orange here at the coast, where the dearth of clouds turns sunset light into a glow on the horizon.
Once upon a time, October could be cool and misty.
Throwback Thursday: Santa Monica Mountains at 6:30 am on Oct. 17, 2012.
Let's distract ourselves from this third day of soul-crushing heat (it was 106 at the Malibu Civic Center yesterday at about 4 pm) and celebrate Puppy Wednesday. (Puppy Wednesday! Still not really a thing! But we're getting close!)
Here's Miss Daisy, who has been at finishing school these last two weeks. She comes home on Saturday and, to celebrate her new skill set, we're planning a nice afternoon tea followed by a cotillion.
Already 88 degrees at 6:30 am, then suddenly 90 as the sun rose. Crazy winds, crazy light, crazy hot.
If you were awake and outdoors last night you may have felt the weather shift, felt sudden hot spots in the cool breeze coming in off the ocean, felt it swirl as it changed direction, coming down from the canyons now, the scent of sea overtaken by sage.
Here at Casa de LOUD! it was 76 degrees as the sun crested the horizon, then suddenly 80 and windy as we headed into Solstice Canyon. Weird light, Walter spooked the whole time, on edge, urging us forward, hurry walk faster, hurry get it over with, hurry get back to the road.
It's supposed to be over 90 at the coast tomorrow and Tuesday, with some reports talking triple digits. And while it's true that October is often one of the warmer months in our area, this heat wave is later and hotter than what we're used to.
Despite abundant rains last winter, the drought years continue to take a toll.
January 2017 in Solstice Canyon:
I can only report, I cannot explain why Walt sometimes chooses to sleep with his head pressed against the wall.
More than a little bit frayed, the table and chairs and sun-struck geraniums, but still loved, still lovely.
It's visibly worse for wear after the hottest summer in California history yet thankfully, almost improbably, considering the pace of development in these parts, the lone California valley oak at the top of Kanan Road is still standing.
I wish it was clearer but it was shot through the windshield at a stop sign just as the light turned green. Still, love seeing the vintage fruit crate aesthetic on a bumper sticker.
Still not really a thing! (Except to Walter, who wants you to know there's also Puppy Thursday, Puppy Friday, Puppy Saturday...)
It begins with a pounce while he's sleeping:
The flying ears show she's not taking prisoners:
Grrrr...
Ummm -- please help me?
