Yesterday at 1 p.m., a digital thermometer on a bank in La Quinta read 118 degrees. Later, in Palm Springs, the Fireman's Association held its annual Fish Fry.It was 115. One woman wondered on a local newscast if they were frying the trout on the sidewalk. Then she giggled. An elderly man was asked if he thought it was wise to hold such events in such extreme conditions: "It's the desert," he said. "It gets hot in the desert. Suck it up."
