Even with a better-than-expected $45 million from "The Croods" and $30 million from "Olympus Has Fallen," weekend revenue was way down from a year ago - largely because a year ago Hollywood had a little number called "The Hunger Games" that picked up $152 million. That's what they've been lacking all year: A genuine runaway train. The closest candidate is "Oz The Great And Powerful," which did $80 million in its first weekend and after three weeks has generated about $180 million.Overall box office is down 13 percent from 2012 and attendance is off 14 percent. Among the flops: "Gangster Squad," "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and "Jack the Giant Slayer." Be wary, however, of the analysis pieces that warn of a terrible movie year (you just know they're coming). It's still early. (Deadline, NYT)
