*Sears to close El Monte store

It's one of 79 U.S. locations (both Sears and Kmarts) that will be shut down. Earlier in the week the retail giant said it would close up to 120 stores, the result of weak sales. The El Monte Sears is located at 3610 Peck Road. Only two other stores are being closed in California, both in San Diego. No word on timing or when additional stores might be shuttered. Here's the list. Florida is the hardest hit state, losing 11 Sears and Kmarts.

*Reader notes:

El Monte used to have an enormous Sears store adjacent to this store...much of this former Sears store is now owned and used by Longo Toyota. In the 50s/60s, that was the only Sears store for miles. As I said, it was enormous. I heard stories that the large basement could also be used as a bomb shelter.
