Only 28 percent of those surveyed by Gallup said their companies and/or employers were hiring, while 21 percent said people were being let go. That translates into a job creation index of 7, which ranks fourth from the bottom of all states. Our friends in North Dakota were in the top spot, with 39 percent saying that new people were being hired and only 6 percent saying that people were being let go - a stunning JCI of 32. One mild surprise: Texas, supposedly the monster job creator, ran at a ho-hum 16 (below Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi). Just another example of why these sorts of surveys should be taken with a grain of salt - it's easy to interpret them however you wish.
