Now this is an interesting response to the new law that forces online retailers to collect sales taxes for purchases made by California residents. Amazon has filed a petition for a referendum that would have voters decide on the requirement. From AP:
Paul Misener, Amazon's vice president of public policy, said the referendum supports "jobs and investment in California." "At a time when businesses are leaving California, it is important to enact policies that attract and encourage business, not drive it away," he said.
Oh, so Amazon knows what's good for us. That's rich. There's no mention in the AP story of litigation, which Amazon has used in other states that have passed similar laws. Perhaps that's because the company has had only limited success in the courts. A referendum would present an interesting choice: Do I vote for something that seems to be in my best interest - not having to pay sales tax - or in the best interest of the state and the state's retailers?
