The L.A. billionaire is a sports nut (his regular Lakers seat is courtside, to the right of Jack Nicholson). But his interest goes way beyond the pros. Gores, CEO of L.A. private equity firm Platinum Equity, has been coaching his kids' teams for years. From the NYT:
Ken Moelis, head of investment bank Moelis & Company, has co-coached their teenage daughters' basketball squad. Throughout the season Mr. Gores would send Mr. Moelis e-mails with lengthy critiques of the team's progress. In the spring of 2008, just hours after the girls lost by a point in the championship game, Mr. Gores was pensive. His e-mail reads: "We will strive to be better next year," wrote Mr. Gores. "What else is there? Tough for you and I to swallow but the journey was good and in the big picture everybody won. Don't worry I am still in pain. Tomorrow is a new day."
Gores will pay $300 million to $400 million for the team, along with the Palace of Auburn Hills arena and the DTE Energy Music Theater.
