Meg Whitman's case study of how not to run a political campaign

A breakout of expenses for the two gubernatorial candidates, as compiled by KPCC's Steve Proffitt:

Campaign Consultants: Whitman $11,693,548; Brown $167,200
Worker Salaries: Whitman $5,918,111; Brown $157,870
Candidate Travel: Whitman $950,890; Brown $12,072
Information Technology: $3,177,978; Brown $23,346
Office Expenses: $2,321,340; Brown $132,023

As for TV ad time, Whitman spent north of $100 million, while Brown spent about $20 million. All told, the Whitman campaign spent roughly $6 for every $1 the Brown campaign invested.
