Fred Segal is back

And this time he's talking low price... sort of. Coming out of retirement (he's 77), the perpetually stylish Segal is working with his daughter Annie on a new boutique and fashion line. Many of the items at Fred Segal Originals will be based on earlier designs. Los Angeles magazine's Laurie Pike got a sneak preview:

They tore into piles of cotton trousers with elastic waistbands and gathered ankles. "I invented these," Fred said, pointing to a vintage photo of the West Hollywood store bearing a sign advertising the trademarked name. Fred himself was in a pair of dark-wash Offons jeans with red stitching. They looked like high-end Japanese denim to me. "Sixty bucks!" he crowed. Most Fred Segal Original items will retail for under $100 ("We eliminate the middleman!" said Fred, having lost none of his salesmanship).
