Activity in the second quarter was up 16 percent from a year earlier, according to FilmLA. Everything went up: Feature films (+11.5 percent), TV (+1.4 percent), and commercials (+34.5 percent). Considering that last year's awful numbers should have been easy to top, the tiny increase in television production may not seem all that convincing. But keep in mind that production activity often bounces around according to season. Within the TV category, reality was up 47.6 percent, sitcoms were up 48.2 percent, and dramas were down 38.2 percent. "We expect a boost in local TV Drama and Sitcom work starting this month and continuing through the fall," said FilmL.A. President Paul Audley. In reporting the film results, the organization credits the state's incentive program (16 projects received tax credits).
