Angelenos are staying home

travel.jpg The folks at Bundle.com have been comparing the amount of money that Americans spend on travel, and as you can see from the chart, L.A. is way down the list. The average household spent $1,622 in 2009, which is slightly higher than the national average, but far lower than households in SF, NY and Washington, D.C. NY spends more on travel than New Orleans ($1057), Baltimore ($1,005), and Jacksonville ($868) combined. One obvious flaw in the data: It includes mass transit -- ferries, subways, taxis and buses. That might explain why places like NY and Chicago are high up on the list (though Bundle says it's not enough not enough to account for all the additional travel spending in those cities). As for L.A. households spending less money, perhaps one explanation is the weather.

Top 10 cities for spending on travel:
1. Arlington, Va: $3,534
2. San Francisco: $3,460
3. Washington, DC: $3,409
4. Scottsdale: $3,372
5. New York: $3,274
6. Fremont, Calif.: $2,976
7. Austin: $2,852
8. Seattle: $2,658
9. Reno: $2,613
10. Oakland: $2,562
