No change in L.A. jobless

April's unemployment rate in L.A. County was 12.3 percent unchanged from a month earlier. (California was at 12.6 percent, also unchanged.) The separate payroll survey showed a gain of 400 jobs in the county, with the leisure and hospitality sector having the largest month-over-month increase (3,600 jobs). That would seem to confirm what many of us have been noticing - a pickup in the restaurant and bar business. Declines were spread among a number of industries. Statewide, 14,200 jobs were added to the rolls. Be careful not to put too much weight into a single month, though it is worth noting that the 14,200 jobs are well behind the numbers recorded in Ohio (+37,300), Pennsylvania (+34,000), New York (+32,700), Texas (+32,500), and Virginia (+28,100). Also keep in mind that the U.S. overall added 290,000 jobs in April.

Here's the EDD release.
