New Gallup poll: One in five American workers think it is "very" or "fairly" likely that they will lose their jobs during the next 12 months., nearly twice the 12 percent level in 2007. In some ways, the numbers are predictable: Back in 1982, another deep recession, 19 percent felt the same way. But this time around it's not just concern about losing a job - it's finding another one just as good. Only 42 percent said that was very or somewhat likely vs. 70 percent in 2001. From Gallup:
Evidently, the downturn in layoffs has not been good enough to make many Americans feel secure in their present jobs. Regaining personal job security is likely to take time and significant new hiring activity. Job fears raise the question of whether the modest uptick in spending seen in March and early April is sustainable.
