Toyota sales fall

They were down 16 percent in January, not a big surprise given the recall and sales suspension. Sales of the eight models connected to the pedal problems were down 21 percent. Meanwhile, Ford sales were up 25 percent, GM 14 percent, and Chrysler 8 percent. From the NYT:

"Our dealers tell us they were seeing more Toyota owners and customers in their stores than what they were seeing in the past," Susan Docherty, G.M.'s vice president for United States sales, said on a conference call with analysts and reporters.

George Pipas, Ford's chief sales analyst, said the Toyota recalls did not significantly affect Ford's sales in the last week of January. "Just a week into this announcement, it's very hard to predict what's going to happen," Mr. Pipas said on a Ford conference call.
