We all know that runaway production refers to movies and TV shows that are filmed outside of Southern California. But how do you describe productions that are moved to Southern California? The ABC soap opera "All My Children" has made the switch from NY to Atwater Village - taping began the first of the year - but there has been zero mention of how many more jobs will be added and in general what it means for the local TV business. The only news coverage has centered on some silly cameo appearances by the mayor and Council President Eric Garcetti. Compare that to the outcry two years ago when producers of "Ugly Betty" decided to move from L.A. to NY. That series became such a poster child for craft unions unhappy about out-of-town productions that last year's legislation to offer state incentives to movies and TV shows was dubbed the Ugly Betty bill. Guess that jobs added to the local workforce dilutes the runaway argument a tad.
