Meg Whitman for governor?

An announcement could happen in the next four to six weeks, an unnamed source told the WSJ. Offering a strong hint of her interest in succeeding Gov. Ahnold, Whitman has stepped down from the boards of Procter & Gamble Co., eBay Inc. and Dreamworks Animation for "personal reasons," according to a spokesman. You might recall that Whitman, former CEO of eBay, had been a senior advisor for the McCain campaign. Her candidacy would not be a big surprise - it's been the talk of Republican insiders for weeks. From the SF Chronicle:

On the GOP side, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is already running an active campaign, and former San Jose Rep. Tom Campbell, dean of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley since 2002, is preparing his own bid. Meg Whitman, the wealthy former eBay chief executive, has been meeting with GOP consultants and donors across the state, and Republicans believe she's likely to announce soon that she will run.
