The general membership session will have Writers Guild leaders laying out the details of a proposed contract that’s still being put together. In an email message to members, WGA negotiating committee chief John Bowman said no formal action would be taken on the contract until after the meeting. That allows them to gauge reaction from guild members. If the WGA leadership strongly supports the package, it's hard to believe that the full union won't go along. Then again, there are still plenty of skeptical hard-liners. The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Shrine auditorium.
On quite a different front, Vanity Fair just announced - quite inexplicably if you ask me - that it's cancelling its annual Oscar bash. "After much consideration, and in support of the writers and everyone else affected by this strike, we have decided that this is not the appropriate year to hold our annual Oscar party," the magazine said in a statement. "We want to congratulate all of this year's nominees and we look forward to hosting our 15th Oscar party next year." Didn’t they get the memo about the strike almost being over? In December, editor in chief Graydon Carter told Women's Wear Daily that the magazine was going ahead with the party, but would make provisions for a short-than-usual ceremony.
