We're talking about 143 million pounds of frozen beef, which is the largest beef recall in the United States. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said his department has evidence that Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. did not routinely contact its vet when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection (the chances of any health threat are considered small). Two former employees were charged Friday, and the feds are still investigating. Maybe now we'll learn a little more about the way Westland/Hallmark did business. (AP)
