-30- hanging over Spring Street

Literally. I've heard there's some sort of sign hanging over the LAT's Spring Street exit that reads -30-, which is what reporters used to tap out to signify the end - of their stories, that is. (There are all kinds of theories on why -30- was used, ranging from it being an old AP story quota to the XXX numeral that Romans supposedly put at the end of news items. But that's all besides the point.) And speaking of -30-, there's chatter - completely unconfirmed so be advised - that personnel cuts have been put on hold. Actually, it wouldn't be surprising, given that the Tribune guys are probably close to deciding whether to sell the joint to Sam Zell or restructure it themselves. Companies typically put a hold on big-deal decisions until they can figure out who will be running the show. A few weeks back, there had been talk about lots of additional newsroom cuts (actual number depending on the salary levels of folks who would be leaving).
