Holiday week news and notes: catching up edition

In the news

The military air space closure over the ocean west of LAX was extended to Sunday, adding three more nights of additional late-night flyovers in South LA areas -- and possibly foretelling another missile launch from a submarine. LAT, LANG

Claremont McKenna College’s dean of students, Mary Spellman, resigned Thursday over racial tensions on the campus. LANG, NYT


Politics, cops and courts

City Hall never did officially call the state of emergency about the homeless that it announced. LAT

The Downtown Regional Connector subway line is already over budget and behind schedule, even though tunneling hasn't even begun. LAT

Disney Chairman and CEO Robert Iger will lead the effort by the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders to build an NFL stadium and move to Carson. He stays at Disney, which owns ESPN. LAT

Rep. Sam Farr, a Democrat from Monterey County, announced Thursday he will not seek reelection and plans to leave Congress in January 2017 at the end of his current term. Roll Call

Los Angeles will be able to start enforcing its new ban on firearm magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition next week, a court ruled. LAT

Proposed Class-Action Settlement Against DWP May Not Help Certain Customers. CBS LA

Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog, called for the replacement of the DWP's taxpayer advocate. Mayor Garcetti says no. LAT, DN

Tribune Publishing filed papers disclosing that buyouts have been approved for 7% of the 7,000 eligible employees. Numbers were not broken out for individual newspapers. At the LA Times, a number of critics and columnists were told they could not take the buyout, but editor ranks are expected to be hit hard. Last day for most: Nov. 25. Chicago Tribune, AP

Frank Pine was promoted to executive editor of Los Angeles News Group, succeeding Michael Anastasi. LANG
