This morning on the "Today" show, Charlie Sheen announced he has been HIV positive for four years. "It's a turning point in one's life," he said. He added that he has paid "into the millions" of dollars to keep the news from getting out — including to people in his inner circle. "We're talking about shakedowns."
In one case, he said, a prostitute took cellphone pictures of the medicines in his bathroom. Sheen said he became infected at a time that he was depressed, taking drugs and drinking heavily. He said he does not know exactly how and when he became infected. Sheen admitted having unprotected sex with two people since receiving the news, and he said both of them knew about his status.
His doctor, also on "Today," said the virus has been suppressed to undetectable by a drug cocktail. "Charlie does not have AIDS," the doctor said. "He is healthy." Watch NBC's video:
