LAPD to hold community meeting after shooting unarmed man in Venice

The latest instance of an LAPD officer killing an unarmed suspect occurred Tuesday night just off the Venice boardwalk. The dead man, identified in reports as Brandon Glenn and as Dizzle, was known in the area and thought to be homeless. He was shot reportedly during an altercation with officers who had tried to detain him outside a bar on Windward Avenue. Security video captured the incident, and on Wednesday Chief of Police Charlie Beck said that at first glance he was “very concerned” about the shooting.

“Any time an unarmed person is shot by a Los Angeles police officer, it takes extraordinary circumstances to justify that,” Beck said. “I have not seen those extraordinary circumstances.”

With anger building in Venice, the LAPD is rolling out some key people for a meeting at 6 p.m. at Westminster Elementary School on Abbot Kinney Blvd. LAPD Inspector General Alexander Bustamente and police commission president Steve Soboroff are expected to attend, along with officers from the LAPD's Pacific area.

Civil rights activists are asking the federal government to look into this and other police shootings.

Here's some video of the aftermath, posted on YouTube.
