Screen grab from LATimes.com just now.
I've been one of those LA Times readers who has been frustrated at how hard it was to find news on the paper's website. That and the general difficulty of navigating is pretty much all I hear about the design of LATimes.com. But suddenly, news rules on the home page. Right now, starting at the top of the page, I count 22 headlines from various sections before they start steering us to older stories and section features from deeper on the site. Good deal.
Though, it is illogical that the first news item under Morning Report carries a California label while the news highlighted in the under text is the shooting of police officers in Ferguson and a report from the tsunami-ravaged region of Japan. That's because Morning Report is actually the aggregation newsletter that the Times sends out now under editor Davan Maharaj's name. It includes news from across the paper, but the website calls it California news.
And it will always be weird that Los Angeles City Hall news is filed under the California menu tab, not the Local tab, but Local includes the news from other city halls in the area. And Obituaries are found under both.
