Emile Hirsch has landed the role of comedian John Belushi in an untitled biopic to be directed by Steve Conrad (screenwriter of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"). Courts and cops

County Assessor John Noguez and tax consultant Ramin Salari, who already were accused of orchestrating a wide-ranging pay-to-play scheme, pleaded not guilty Monday to new felony charges of illegally lowering taxes on three more commercial buildings. LAT, DN

A new report by the Office of Independent Review looks at a pile of allegations of past abuse in the Los Angeles County jails, and finds that most of the cases cannot be conclusively resolved due to the poor quality (or nonexistence) of timely investigations into the alleged incidents after they actually occurred. A 71-year-old man was being interrogated by Montreal police after attempting to board a Los Angeles-bound flight with components in his carry-on luggage that could be assembled to make a bomb. LAT

Two Los Angeles police officers were injured after a fire Monday morning ripped through a Panorama City apartment where firefighters found a body. LAT
