Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday signed the bill clarifying that an attacker who impersonates someone else to coerce a victim into sexual activity can be prosecuted for rape. He also approved a bill requiring that those convicted of "swatting" calls pay full restitution for the costs of police response. LAT

Mayor Eric Garcetti quietly served a day of jury duty at the Criminal Courts Building and, like most, was excused without getting on a case. LA Weekly

Building a proposed streetcar line in downtown Los Angeles may cost more than twice the original estimate, an adjustment that raises serious questions about the project's funding and future. LAT

Amy Ephron profiles Compton Mayor Aja Brown for Vogue.
