Garcetti takes oath at private gathering on Echo Park Lake

garcetti-island-eastsider.jpgMayor-elect Eric Garcetti took his oath of office today on the island in Echo Park Lake. The group was small and separated from the public by police. From The Eastsider LA:

Los Angeles City Clerk June Lagmay, who was present at the ceremony, said Garcetti will officially assume the role and duties of mayor beginning July 1. After the ceremony concluded around 6 p.m., Garcetti, who held a child in his hands, and the others crossed the bridge back into the main part of the park, which reopened to the public only two weeks ago after being closed for a two-year-long clean up

A pair of park police officers prevented people from crossing the bridge to the island, where perhaps about a dozen people, including Garcetti’s wife, Amy Wakeland, his father, Gil Garcetti, and Bishop Jon Bruno of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, were present when the mayor-elect took the oath.

Garcetti will officially become mayor on Sunday when the calendar turns to July 1. He has scheduled a public swearing-in ceremony and inaugural party on the City Hall steps at 6 p.m. The swearing in of Garcetti and other new city officials will last until about 7 p.m. and include a song by Moby, an invocation by Rabbi Susan Goldberg of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, and comments from TV host Jimmy Kimmel. Ron Galperin will be sworn in as City Controller by State Controller John Chiang. Mike Feuer will be sworn in as City Attorney by State Attorney General Kamala Harris.

At about 7 p.m., the crowd will be invited into Grand Park for a party lasting until about 9:30.

Earlier on Friday, Garcetti took part in his meeting of the City Council. Photo by Gary Leonard:
