This is kind of fun to watch. Hours after Eric Garcetti put out the word that he was endorsed by City Councilwoman Jan Perry, and before the media op was even held, Wendy Greuel's team announced that she has been endorsed by Magic Johnson. That presser is scheduled for 1 p.m. outside the West Angeles Church of God in Christ on Crenshaw Boulevard. (Garcetti's event with Perry is at 11 a.m.) Greuel's release says she will be joined by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and LA Sentinel publisher Danny Bakewell. So for today's news cycle, any black voters who might be impressed that Garcetti has the backing of a long-time representative like Jan Perry will also be told, look, a major sports icon like Magic Johnson and other African American community leaders are siding with Greuel. Johnson, in addition to his identification with the Lakers and now with the Dodgers, is a successful developer and entrepreneur around Los Angeles whose name used to be on the movie theaters at the mall on Crenshaw. Be interesting to see how it all plays out.
