People magazine broke the story that after five and a half years of a closely watched marriage, actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes put out the word that they will divorce. "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy," a Cruise representative told the magazine. Holmes' attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, also said "this is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." He's 49, she's 33. Suri, their daughter, is now six. There has been heightened interest in the coupling all along in part because of the Church of Scientology angle, and its role in Cruise's previous failed marriage to Nicole Kidman.
* Plot thickens: Holmes filed papers yesterday in New York that request sole custody of the child, TMZ reports.
