3rd Street to remain closed at Fairfax all day *

The DWP, which is scrambling to repair a flurry of water main breaks it blames on work at the distant Lower Franklin Canyon reservoir, says that West 3rd Street will remain closed between Fairfax Avenue and Ogden Drive until 7 p.m. That's an unforgiving intersection outside Farmers Market in the best of times, so plan accordingly. The department says nearly a dozen breaks in 8-inch water mains and smaller pipes this morning in the Fairfax Avenue are all a result of pressure issues that resulted when the reservoir in Franklin Canyon above Beverly Hills was taken out of service yesterday and bypassed with other water sources. "Franklin Reservoir has a floating cover which requires periodic inspection and maintenance," the DWP says. "The reservoir work should be completed by the end of the week." Updated post

Reports of a water main break at Melrose and La Cienega are incorrect, the DWP also says. It's just runoff from the other breaks.
