The Grammys handled the death of Whitney Houston by having host LL Cool J follow opening act Bruce Springsteen with some words of tribute and a prayer "for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston." Later, at the conclusion of the in memoriam section of the show, Jennifer Hudson sang Houston's hit "I Will Always Love You." Other artists made references to Houston throughout. Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys paid tribute to Etta James on the show, and during the pre-broadcast awarding of lesser Grammy categories Tony Bennett invited the parents of Amy Winehouse to the stage.
Meanwhile, British singer Adele was the big winner, taking home six Grammys including those for album, record and song of the year. She also appeared on CBS' "60 Minutes." Full list of winners.
News note: The Los Angeles County coroner completed the autopsy of Houston's body and an official said that while no signs of foul play were found, it would take weeks before toxicological tests allow a cause of death to be determined. And sadly, Houston's daughter Bobbi was twice taken to the hospital on Sunday, clearly struggling with the death of her mother. Her father, Bobby Brown, arrived at LAX Sunday night and was mobbed by paparazzi. Houston died yesterday in the bathroom of her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
BAFTA note: "The Artist" won top prize at the Britiish film academy's awards in London. Official list of winners.
