Morning Buzz: Thursday 12.1.11

  • Pasadena and Sierra Madre have closed schools today and declared a local emergency due to overnight damage from winds. Schools are also closed in Ahambra, Arcadia, La Canada, Monrovia, San Gabriel and San Marino, the L.A. Times reports. The winds have been unusually strong, even for Santa Anas. The National Weather Service says the wind should lessen during the say before kicking back up tonight.
  • The DWP says that as of 6 a.m., about 88,700 customers are "experiencing power interruptions" as winds continue. Outside the city, 211,327 Southern California Edison residential customers were without power.
  • A retired top commander in Los Angeles County's jail system said he warned Sheriff Lee Baca and other senior officials last year about deputies using excessive force against inmates but was ignored until the problems grew into a public scandal. LAT, Witness LA
  • The stuff left behind outside City Hall by Occupy LA was either personal treasures, art or a mess, depending on your point of view. Mayor Villaraigosa suggested the camp will end up costing the city more than $1 million. LAT Plus: Tactics and reaction: LAT, DN
  • The AIDS Healthcare Foundation says it has collected enough signatures to put a measure on the city ballot to require the use of condoms in the Los Angeles adult film industry. LAT, LA Weekly
  • What's unusual about how doctors choose to die is "not how much treatment they get compared to most Americans, but how little." Zocalo
  • Times columnist George Skelton makes some points about covering Sacramento politics for 50 years. LAT
  • The Anaheim Ducks fired coach Randy Carlyle, who got a three-year contract extension in August, and hired Bruce Boudreau, recently fired by the Washington Capitals. Boudreau was prominently featured in an HBO series last year on the NHL. LAT
