Dobie Gray, born in Texas, moved to Los Angeles in the early 1960s to be an actor but had greater success as a singer. (He did spend a couple of years in the Los Angeles production of "Hair," presumably the one at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood.) Before moving to Nashville, Gray had his biggest hit in 1973 with Drift Away. But in the 1960s, he was known for "The In Crowd." From Shindig, introduced by Jimmy O'Neill:
