We unveiled a new format today for the weekly LA Observed commentary on KCRW. Instead of a recorded column where I just gab, I now chat with "All Things Considered" host Lisa Napoli about my chosen topic. Today it was Magic Johnson and the 20th anniversary of his HIV announcement and retirement. The segment still airs on KCRW at 6:44 p.m. on Mondays, and can still be downloaded at KCRW.com and from iTunes. It's nice to change things up a little after four years on the air under the old format. This approach will feel familiar to regular NPR listeners, and of course it has always been the way Mark does his LA Biz Observed business reports on KPCC.

Noted: On the same day that Magic Johnson made his big announcement, legendary L.A. radio and TV sportscaster Jim Healy received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Healy was big into football, boxing at the Olympic Auditorium, horse racing and the Dodgers — and was known for his humor and his rich repertoire of sound effects and clips.
