Border fence to extend into ocean

border-fence-east.jpgThe U.S. Border Patrol is planning to spend $4.3 million trying to extend the border fence with Mexico 300 feet into the Pacific Ocean off Imperial Beach. It's not an easy thing to do. The current fence arrangement is breached fairly easily, and building the new segment "presents unique logistical challenges," the L.A. Times notes. "Before construction even begins, a government contractor must build a long pier to hold a crane, which will pound the fence posts into the sand. On a recent day, people on the Tijuana side of the beach marveled at the temporary structure, which is under construction, mistakenly believing it would be used for fishing or for docking boats."
