What becomes of Johnie's in LACMA deal?

johnies_coffee_shop-martin.jpg

For a lot of us, the future (or potential fate) of Johnie's Coffee Shop was one of the first questions to come to mind after the news broke that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would buy the former May Company across the street for a film museum. Now New York Times writer Michael Cieply puts the question in print, but gets no answer from 99 Cents Only Stores, which owns the long-closed Googie diner at Wilshire and Fairfax. In the meantime, Cieply romps through the diner's cinematic history ("Miracle Mile," "Big Lewbowski," "Volcano") and drops in a nice mention of Wilshire Boulevard: Grand Concourse of Los Angeles.
