LAPD officer shot in Sylmar, in surgery

Steve Jenkins is in surgery in "very guarded" condition after being shot in the face on Dronfield Avenue, LAPD chief Charlie Beck announced. Jenkins had responded with other officers to a domestic violence call and was searching the suspect at about 2:45 a.m. when shots were fired. The suspect is believed to still be in the house. SWAT officers have surrounded the house, and nearby residents have been evacuated until the suspect is taken into custody.

Jenkins is a veteran K-9 officer with the Metropolitan Division whose wife and son are also LAPD officers. Beck and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa were at Holy Cross hospital, where the chief said Jenkins was wounded in the jaw area and the shoulder area, and a bullet traveled into his chest cavity.
