Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown will sign copies of his memoir, "Against All Odds: My Life of Hardship, Fast Breaks and Second Chances" at noon Friday at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena. Brown is the Republican who claimed the seat long held by Democrat Ted Kennedy. Brown told Steven Herbert of City News Service he didn't want to write "a typical politician book" where "everything's great, great, great, I'm great, great, great."
Instead, Brown said he produced a "raw tale" detailing the challenges he faced, including having his mother and father being married and divorced four times each, being beaten by a stepfather when he was 6 years old as he tried to protect his mother, sexual abuse by a camp counselor when he was 10 years old, and being arrested for shoplifting when he was 12 years old."The message is I had a lot of good people around me to help pull me through, including sports," said Brown, who played college basketball on the nonscholarship Division III level for Tufts University. "It's a very hopeful, straight forward book."
