Satellite going up from Vandenberg after 2 a.m. *

NASA hopes to launching a science mission dubbed Glory at 2:09 a.m. The Taurus rocket (like the one at left) is scheduled for launch at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc. Says NASA: "Climatologists have known for decades that airborne particles called aerosols can have a powerful impact on the climate. However, pinpointing the magnitude of the effect has proven challenging because of difficulties associated with measuring the particles on a global scale. Glory should help scientists collect the data needed to provide firmer answers about the important particles."

The ascending rocket should be clearly visible from Los Angeles, clouds permitting. The Los Angeles Fire Department tweets: No need to call 9-1-1.

* No go: They will try again tomorrow.
