In praise of Long Beach Poly football

Current TV has a new docu-series coming next year called "4th and Forever," on the football program at Long Beach Poly — the U.S. high school that has sent the most players to the NFL. From the sneak peek:

For Poly players, football is a way out of a neighborhood struggling with poverty, drugs and gangs. But 2009 was a down year: Poly lost its first league game in 15 years and fell to crosstown rival Lakewood for the first time since 1982. Can head coach Raul Lara drive his team back to the top in 2010? His players' dreams for a better future are riding on it.

Speaking of the NFL: At Native Intelligence, Phil Wallace favors building a stadium and attracting a football team for a simple reason: "I really enjoy watching professional football and I would like a local team to call my own. I would like to attend a few NFL games a year in my own city and cheer on a team with other fans who live here."
