Street tension in Watts over police shooting

An LAPD tactical alert was in force for about an hour earlier this evening following the police shooting of a suspect in the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. The man had pointed a gun at officers, the LAPD says. An angry crowd formed in the area, but after a heavy police response the crowd dispersed and the alert was canceled at 6:45 p.m. The suspect later died at St. Francis Medical Center. His name has not been released.

Media geography: Colleen Williams on KNBC earlier tonight kept ad-libbing that the news was breaking in the "city of Watts." Yeesh. Just picture the poor producer: "Colleen, if Watts were another city, would the LAPD be on scene?"
