Search teams in Joshua Tree National Park shut down trails to preserve any tracks that may have been left by hiker Ed Rosenthal, and by nightfall had picked up "clear indications of Rosenthal's presence" several miles south of the original search zone. One sign may have been his footprints. "His family has told us what kind of shoes he was wearing and we can’t have other hikers coming through,” park spokesman Joe Zarki said earlier in the day. Rosenthal's wife in Culver City, Nicole Kaplan, had told officials he would not have planned to camp overnight and said hotel employees noticed when he did not return from a day hike. Rosenthal, the poet-broker of downtown Los Angeles, has been missing since last Friday.
