A gathering of mostly immigrants massed in front of the Rampart LAPD division on 6th Street tonight to vent over the weekend killing of day laborer Manuel Jamines. Police in riot gear pushed the crowd back to 6th and Union Avenue, where objects were thrown at police and officers fired non-lethal projectiles at the crowd. Earlier in the evening, LAPD chief Charlie Beck identified three Rampart bicycle officers who said they confronted Jamines threatening a woman with a knife. He then turned toward them and refused to drop the knife, the police said. Beck identified the officer who shot and killed Jamines as 13-year veteran Frank Hernandez. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined Beck at a press conference and urged calm. Beck said he would attend a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at John Leichty Middle School on Union Avenue. Last night at a protest in the same area, four people were arrested and three officers suffered minor injuries. L.A. Now items, CBS 2, MSNBC, Univision, Neon Tommy
* 10 p.m. news update: Channel 5 shows burning dumpsters and debris in the street and footage of skirmishes with police. Reporter Jamie Chambers says a reporter from Channel 34 was struck on the head by a slingshot object and injured.
Wishful thinking: The Police Protective League said in a statement "this was not and should not be a controversial shooting."
** 10:50 update: The situation was escalated to a citywide tactical alert so more officers could be brought to the Westlake area.
