- University of California president Mark Yudof and the chancellor of the state community college system resigned from the board of the California chamber of Commerce over the group's backing of Meg Whitman for governor. LAT

- Welfare payments to children of illegal immigrants in Los Angeles County increased in July to $52 million, up by $3.7 million from July 2009, says Supervisor Mike D. Antonovich. LAT

- CBS 2 adds a half-hour newscast at 4:30 a.m. starting today, bringing the total hours of news each weekday on channels 2 and 9 to 11½.
- East Coast media blogger Rachel Sklar inadvertently posted a Twitter direct message that set tongues wagging: "I have no plans and would love to eat your cookies and sleep in your bed!"
