Long-delayed Siqueiros mural a step closer

olvera-mural-kpcc.jpg

Seems like forever that restoration work has been talked about or underway on the 1932 David Siqueiros mural, American Tropical, at Olvera Street. It was already in progress in 2005 when I reported on the discovery of a second Siqueiros mural that had been painted over for its political content in 1930s L.A. Anyway, on Wednesday ground was broken on a $9 million interpretive center that has been added to the Olvera Street project. (Projected completion: 2012.) When do you ever see an old-fashioned shovel-and-grin photo anymore? Compliments of KPCC's Adolfo Guzman-Lopez, who covered the event.

Blogged: One of the shovel-and-grinners, Councilman Jose Huizar, posted about it.
