Standing ovation: Stan Chambers to retire

The dean of Los Angeles television reporters — and it's not even close — turns 87 tomorrow and is expected to hang up his mike at an 11 a.m. party on the KTLA lot. Stan has worked at Channel 5 for 63 years, since 1947 — the year the station began airing news. "Stan still comes in just about every day, putting together feature stories on topics that interest him," reporter Eric Spillman blogs. "Don't worry, though, Stan promises you'll still see him on the air from time to time." He quotes Chambers saying, "There's a time for everything." There's already a banner up in the newsroom with Stan's picture on it, says another veteran KTLA staffer: "Tomorrow is Stan Chambers’ last day at KTLA."

2007 video: Chambers talking to Jacob Soboroff of LA Observed about covering the Kathy Fiscus story in 1949.
