The Senate bill that would have made Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich the state's only city attorney with the power to make mischief via grand jury has quietly died in committee, says a Valley group that opposed the measure. "We found the bill to be unnecessary and potentially costly to Los Angeles taxpayers,” said Valley Industry and Commerce Association chair Daymond Rice. “With the district attorney’s abilities to empanel grand juries for felony cases there is no reason for the city attorney to have that same power regarding misdemeanors." SB 1168 was proposed by Sen. Gil Cedillo and would have expired the day after Trutanich's first term ended, VICA says.
