Matthew Butcher, who was shot during a robbery at a marijuana clinic in Echo Park, was the 27-year-old son of Julie Butcher. She is a longtime leader of the Service Employees International Union in Los Angeles, and was on most L.A. news stations tonight describing her son as a peaceful man who would not have resisted a robber. Police said the killing of Butcher, and the stabbing death of a pot clinic worker in Hollywood several hours later on Thursday, do not appear related. Another employee of the Echo Park clinic who was shot survived. At both locations, the surveillance tape video was removed by the attackers.
