California coming up on 39 million people

Each year around this time, the state's Department of Finance estimates the population for California and every city. It's not a real count, but it's as close as we can get before the census results are tabulated. Some tidbits from the new report, which estimates population as of Jan. 1, 2010.

California population: 38,648,000 (up 393,000 over 2009)

Cities that added popluation: 445
Cities that lost people: 30
Los Angeles increase: 44,037
Fastest growing city under 300,000: Irvine
Population of Los Angeles County: 10,441,080

No changes in the order of L.A. County cities.
