Cardinal Roger Mahony introduced his designated successor this morning, calling Jose Gomez an advocate for immigrants and the poor. Gomez said that Los Angeles “like no other city in the world, has the global face of the Catholic Church.” After his appointment by Pope Benedict, Gomez said he turned to a painting of our Lady of Guadalupe: “I felt her love and protection. From the cathedral: "As Coadjutor, Archbishop Gomez, will automatically become head of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles upon Cardinal Roger Mahony’s retirement at age 75 on February, 27, 2011. A Mass of Reception for Archbishop Gomez is scheduled for May 26th."
